Learning Outcome Four

Outcome 4 (Peer Review) – Be able to critique their own and others’ work by emphasizing global revision early in the writing process and local revision later in the process.

Sample One – Peer’s End Comment

Examining another’s work helps them and yourself as a writer. I am allowed to glimpse into someone else’s perspective and writing style while they receive constructive criticism and appraisal for their drafts. Peer review is overall a rewarding experience meant to aid everyone involved. Not only is it vital to comment on another’s work, but receiving criticism on yours is advantageous in the writing process. Both partners benefit from observing each other’s work, meaning it’s equally important to view a sample from someone else’s comments on my work as it is to glimpse my own comments on theirs.

Essay Three Rough Draft – Peer’s End Comment on my Essay

The end comment left by my peer was elegantly written and provided suggestions for my hook statement and to keep my naysayer paragraph. I greatly appreciate the comments regarding my word flow and contextual understanding, and it motivates me to continue such work. My overarching peer review experience was valuable in completing a well-thought-out essay that makes sense to the reader, as writers can get too used to reading their own texts.

Sample Two – Comments (General)

The final peer review was likely the most constructive review given throughout the semester, as initially, I was unsure of my ability and what to look for. Here, we will be observing comments left by myself on another’s work.

Essay Three Rough Draft – Comment on Introduction Paragraph

My peer reviewing in this sample displays how constructive criticism and suggestions can help a peer revise their work later. Due to a lot of this author’s paragraph formatted as paraphrase, there was no room for their voice, which left me wanting to hear their opinions more. I believe the paraphrase works well as a summary but is a bit overbearing for an introductory paragraph, to which I propose further use of their voice before their thesis. In addition to this, I noticed a focus on Ross Gay’s work, while Zadie Smith is hardly mentioned, which I suggest adding to this first section.

Sample Three – My End Comment

End comments are an all-encompassing aspect of the peer review process, and I find it the most beneficial overall. While many comments left on each page can be more minute details, frequently based on local revision, end comments allow the reviewer to talk globally. End comments give the writer time to ponder their finest details and things that may need improvement. The following is my end comment I left on a peer’s work during the final essay.

Essay Three Rough Draft – My End Comment on Peer’s Work

While my end comment is quite long, I wanted to ensure I covered everything I wanted to say about my peer’s piece. Being able to sort out the strengths and weaknesses in one’s work can help them focus on bettering their weak point(s) while still employing their strengths. As it is merely a first draft, I thought it best to highlight the robust anecdotes they utilize, and should continue to do so, and suggest they frequently reflect on their thesis to stay on the right track. Their use of their own voice was powerful and moving to a reader, so remarking on this strength can help them along as they continue to write and formulate a final draft.
