Artifact 2 (SPE 220)

Artifact #2 – IRIS Modules, Standard #10 Leadership and Collaboration

Communication is vital to effectively teaching and community-building both in and outside the classroom. For the artifact, I chose three IRIS Module homework assignments: IEPs, Pre-Referral and Referral, and Families. Each of these sections included communication and collaboration and taught me just how important it is for everyone involved. Where there is a student, there must also be continuous, two-way communication between the teacher and the family. These modules discussed the importance of community-building and relationship-building between teachers, students, families, and the wider community. Keeping up with parents/guardians makes them feel more included in their child’s education and strengthens relationships. With an IEP, communication and leadership are vital to organizing and collaborating with parents/guardians to ensure their involvement in supporting their child educationally. Teachers should also contact colleagues and other school professionals for guidance and support in their classroom and professional growth.

Collaboration and leadership are integral parts of a successful classroom. These modules helped give me ideas on how to foster communication in and out of school to ensure student’s success and family involvement. As a future teacher, I believe it is necessary to offer continuous communication to families. I hope to utilize a newsletter when I begin teaching. This standard is crucial to remember as it builds closer relationships and can be a beneficial tool for an educator. As a teacher, there is much responsibility in that role, so without leadership and collaboration, I find it difficult to imagine a functional classroom.  With more leadership and collaboration, teachers are better equipped to manage their classrooms and provide students with opportunities to thrive.
