Evidence #1 – 2/5

Relay Activity at Pond Cove Elementary

With one of the fourth grade classes, I helped set up this relay race activity by scattering pieces of a mentor text around the room. Their goal was to put the text in the correct order after finding all the pieces with their team. It was great to see them all working together to pull this story together and ensuring they had the correct number of paragraphs. The teaching artist also let me read out the correct order to the class afterwards.

For much of my evidence I will have to utilize my journal that I bring to each site, since I work with mostly minors, and do not wish to take pictures of their work without their consent.

I got the opportunity to plan and present this hybrid writing activity with one of the programs I work with weekly (The Publishing Workshop). Introducing them to how classic, linear narrative is not the only option when writing nonfiction, I had them write about meaningful places and then cut up their pieces to create something new. Some students took inspiration from nature (see slides) while others went more abstract. The teaching artist also wants to use this activity for the York Residency later on when they work on revision.

First day at Pond Cove Activity

For my first day at this residency, the teaching artist asked me to model this diagram for the students to copy down for a brainstorming activity. I also led this in the second classroom that day, in addition to the introductory activity called The Great Wind Blows.
